Diamonds are Forever singer Shirley Bassey smashes world record in charity jewellery auction

Diamonds Are Forever singer, Shirley Bassey, has made headlines after smashing a world record in a Paris auction for charity. The renowned singer, who hails from Cardiff’s Tiger Bay, saw all items from her personal jewellery collection sell for an impressive collective total of 2.2 million euros (£1.8 million).

Among the standout pieces was Dame Shirley’s Cartier Baignoire gold wristwatch, which fetched a remarkable 66,000 euros (£54,976), a stark contrast to its estimated value of 1,500 to 3,000 euros. Another remarkable sale was her vintage 1960s Van Cleef and Arpels diamond ring, a gift from Sir Elton John, which sold for 48,000 euros (£39,995), over three times its estimated value.

The auction also featured a Van Cleef and Arpels emerald and diamond necklace associated with Dame Shirley’s first Royal Variety Performance, selling for 174,000 euros (£144,985), as well as a vintage diamond brooch from 1905, which fetched 162,000 euros (£134,991).

The auction, part of Sotheby’s Fine Jewels biannual sale, took place on October 10 in Paris, with the proceeds going towards charitable causes supported by Dame Shirley Bassey.

Renowned for her iconic performances of three James Bond theme songs, including “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever,” Dame Shirley’s passion for jewellery dates back to her early singing career. Speaking about her love for diamonds, she expressed how the song “Diamonds Are Forever” resonated with her sentiments towards the precious stones.

Dame Shirley’s illustrious singing career began in 1953, with her groundbreaking achievements including recording multiple 007 themes and securing a UK number one single with “As I Love You” in 1959. Throughout her career, she has amassed 12 UK top 10 singles and eight top 10 albums.

The successful auction not only showcased the enduring appeal of Dame Shirley Bassey but also highlighted her generosity in supporting charitable causes through the sale of her cherished jewellery pieces.
