Dermatologist warns we overlook six areas prone to skin cancer

Skin cancer remains a significant concern in the UK, affecting 17,500 individuals annually, with a projected 9% increase in cases. Despite growing sunscreen usage awareness, dermatologists are cautioning the public about neglecting protection for six key areas prone to skin cancer. Olga Skydan, a certified dermatologist at Luvly, highlights these overlooked zones that are left vulnerable to the sun’s harmful effects, heightening the risk of cancer.

One commonly disregarded area is the scalp and hairline, constantly exposed to sun damage. While applying sunscreen directly may not be feasible, wearing a hat can offer protection when outdoors. The back of the neck, often concealed by hair, requires attention and sunscreen application, particularly for individuals with short hair or those who tie their hair up. Ears, prominently exposed and prone to sunburn, should be completely shielded with sunscreen to prevent damage.

The delicate skin around the eyelids and under eyes is thin and sensitive, making it easy prey for UV radiation. Carefully applying lightweight SPF cream around these areas is crucial for protection. Lips, similarly vulnerable to sunburn, need to be safeguarded with a high SPF lip balm to prevent potential damage. Additionally, hands and feet, commonly overlooked, are equally susceptible to sun damage and should not be neglected.

Dermatologists emphasise the importance of diligently protecting these often ignored areas to reduce the risk of skin cancer. By taking proactive steps to shield these zones, individuals can better safeguard their skin health and well-being.
