A train journey to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) was abruptly halted when the locomotive derailed. The Snowdon Mountain Railway service, which was carrying passengers from Llanberis station on Tuesday morning, encountered a problem at Clogwyn. An insider claimed to North Wales Live that the locomotive and carriage had not been properly attached, leading to them coming apart at the Clogwyn Loop and causing the derailment.
Despite the incident, no injuries were reported and no damage was done to the train. A spokesperson for the Snowdon Mountain Railway said, “A service travelling to the summit encountered a small technical issue yesterday (Tuesday).” Following company procedures, the journey was halted by the driver, and all passengers were returned to Llanberis station safely. The spokesperson added, “There were no injuries or damage to the train, and all passengers were returned to Llanberis station. A normal service will be resuming later today (Wednesday).”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) stated that they had been informed of the low-speed derailment and are currently making inquiries. A decision on whether an investigation will be launched will be taken in the coming days. The Snowdon Mountain Railway, in operation since 1896, takes thousands of passengers to the top of Wales’s highest peak annually.
