Dentist says ‘one mistake’ is turning your teeth yellow

A recent warning from dentist Dr. Ferakh Hamid highlights a common mistake that could be contributing to teeth turning yellow. Dr. Hamid, from Aesthetique Dental Care, advises that before brushing your teeth, it’s beneficial to wet your toothbrush. This small step helps spread the toothpaste evenly across the teeth, making the cleaning process more effective. Additionally, wetting the bristles softens them, leading to a gentler brushing experience that is kinder to both gums and teeth.

Dry brushing, a practice some may favour for surface stain removal, can have adverse effects over time. Without water, toothpaste may not spread well, resulting in duller teeth. Moreover, brushing immediately after consuming acidic foods can wear down tooth enamel, revealing the yellow layer beneath and causing teeth to appear more yellowed. Therefore, the timing and method of brushing are crucial in maintaining the natural colour and shine of teeth.

To prevent problems, Dr. Hamid recommends a thorough cleaning routine, including gentle brushing of teeth and gums for two minutes twice daily, using antimicrobial products like mouthwash or toothpaste, regular dental visits, daily tongue cleaning, and proper denture care. Following these steps diligently can help safeguard dental health and ensure a fresh, healthy mouth in the long run.
