Actress Demi Moore has offered a heartfelt update on her ex-husband Bruce Willis’ battle with dementia. The 51-year-old shared her thoughts about the Die Hard star’s health during the 2024 Hamptons International Film Festival in New York, where she received an Acting Award. Bruce Willis, 68, had to step back from acting two years ago after being diagnosed with aphasia, a neurological condition affecting communication. Unfortunately, his health has since deteriorated, resulting in a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Speaking at a panel discussion, Demi described Bruce as ‘stable’ amidst the complexities of his illness. She emphasised the importance of meeting him where he is at, rather than holding onto the past. Despite their divorce over a decade ago, Demi and Bruce have maintained a close relationship, co-parenting their three adult daughters. Bruce remarried actress Emma Heming Willis in 2009, adding two more daughters to his family.
Reflecting a similar sentiment, Bruce’s daughter, Tallulah, shared that the family strives to be open and supportive during visits with her father. Frontotemporal dementia is a rare form of dementia that primarily impacts behaviour and language, typically diagnosed in individuals between 45 and 65 years old. With no cure or method to slow its progression, the average life expectancy is around nine years from the first symptom.
Despite Bruce’s communication challenges, Tallulah expressed gratitude that his physical mobility remains intact. She shared hopes for more time with her father and acknowledged the similarities between them. The family’s unwavering support and understanding during this challenging time reflect their deep bond and resilience. The journey with dementia is complex, but their commitment to meeting Bruce where he is showcases the beauty of love and acceptance in the face of adversity.
