Drug Dealer Attempts to Destroy Evidence During Police Raid
A drug dealer in Wales attempted to dispose of crucial evidence by trying to flush a mobile phone and a SIM card down the toilet as police were raiding his residence. The dealer, Corey Barnett, aged 29, was identified through his phone number found on devices seized in a prior drug raid in Newport. The retrieved messages unveiled Barnett’s role in instructing individuals to deliver class A drugs to customers in the Gwent region. Upon police arrival at Barnett’s home on February 11, sounds of the toilet being flushed were heard. Upon entry, law enforcement discovered a Nokia phone and a SIM card in the toilet, while an iPhone seized from the bedroom further incriminated Barnett in the supply of cocaine.
During a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Jenny Yeo elaborated on Barnett’s involvement in drug-related activities. Barnett, residing at Bessemer Drive, admitted to being connected to the supply of class A drugs and violating a Serious Crime Prevention Order limiting him to one phone. His criminal record comprises 18 prior convictions, including drug possession, antisocial behaviour breaches, drug possession with intent to supply, and conspiracy to supply class A drugs.
In his defence, Barnett’s solicitor, Byron Broadstock, highlighted his client’s challenges in securing employment post-release due to arm injuries sustained while working. Facing a delayed benefits claim, Barnett resorted to accepting £300 weekly to operate the drug line and direct operatives. Judge Eugene Egan imposed a 2,045-day prison sentence on Barnett, with a requirement to serve half the term in custody before being released on licence for the remaining period.
