In response to US President Donald Trump’s discussions about acquiring Greenland from Denmark, a Danish petition has surfaced, proposing a light-hearted bid to purchase the state of California. The petition aims to bring “hygge to Hollywood,” a concept of coziness and conviviality often associated with Denmark. With a whimsical tone, the petition suggests that Denmark should enhance its territory by adding more sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates, envisioning a California transformed into “New Denmark.” Garnering over 200,000 signatures and counting, the petition sets out a goal of 500,000 supporters, alongside a fundraising target of one trillion dollars, humorously suggesting that each Dane contributes 200,000 kroner.

Solvang, also known as “the Danish capital of America,” was established in 1911 by three Danish immigrants. Renaming the iconic theme park as “Hans Christian Andersenland” and proposing a Viking-helmet-clad Mickey Mouse, the petition injects a dose of whimsy into the political discourse surrounding territorial ambitions. However, the petition clarifies in its fine print that the campaign exists solely in the realm of imagination, stating: “Disclaimer: This campaign is 100% real … in our dreams.”
