His mother, Nicola Barter, shared that his behaviour seemed normal before his disappearance, as he left home in his Audi car and later messaged her on July 31 to inform her that he would be staying over at a friend’s place. Concerns arose when days passed without any contact from Marcus, prompting his family to contact Gwent Police for assistance. The community joined forces with the authorities, utilizing drones, search dogs, and collaborating with Mountain Rescue in their efforts to locate Marcus.
Despite the extensive search operations, it was not until September 8 that members of the public, as part of a search party organised by Marcus’ family, discovered his remains in a field in Llanmartin. The challenging terrain, comprising boggy marshland and obstacles like stiles and barbed wire fencing, made the location difficult to access. Police Sergeant Mitchell Harris, who was present at the scene, officially pronounced Marcus deceased and his identity was confirmed through dental records. A post-mortem examination conducted by pathologist Dr John Williams could not establish a definitive cause of death due to the condition of Marcus’ body.
It was revealed during the inquest that Marcus had been struggling with anxiety and OCD, receiving medication for these conditions. His family expressed that he had been making progress before his disappearance, though his brother, Simon, mentioned his history of drug use, including cocaine, which had impacted his behaviour in the period leading up to his death. Close friend Samantha Roberts disclosed that she had witnessed Marcus consuming cocaine on the night of July 31, the last time she saw him alive. Despite these revelations, the coroner, Caroline Saunders, refrained from attributing Marcus’ death to drug use, issuing an open conclusion due to insufficient evidence regarding the circumstances of his passing.
