Dad was ‘broken in half’ after daughter’s routine eye test quickly escalated to 11-hour surgery

A routine eye test at Specsavers in North Wales led to a life-changing discovery for 10-year-old Rhea Hamlet-Jolley. During the eye test, the optician noticed swelling in Rhea’s optic nerve and immediately advised her father, Anthony, to take her to the hospital. Rhea was then transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, a decision that left Anthony feeling devastated as he realised the seriousness of his daughter’s condition.

Anthony shared that while Rhea did not wear glasses, she underwent yearly check-ups at Specsavers. In August 2024, during one of these routine check-ups, the swelling in her optic nerve was detected, prompting the referral to the hospital. Initially, there were no alarming symptoms, but further examinations revealed the swelling, leading to urgent tests at Alder Hey.

Days later, Rhea underwent a series of tests, including eye examinations, MRI, and CT scans, which ultimately unveiled a tumour in her brain. Rhea underwent an extensive 11-hour surgery to remove the tumour, but the procedure left her with lasting complications. Anthony disclosed that Rhea’s post-surgery recovery took a challenging turn, resulting in a stint in the ICU due to unforeseen issues.

The surgery had lasting effects on Rhea’s health, leaving her with complex hormone requirements and necessitating ongoing care for the rest of her life. Anthony had to take time off work to care for Rhea, while Frankie, Rhea’s mother, stayed home with their three-month-old baby. Despite the challenges, the family remains hopeful for Rhea’s recovery and has set up a GoFundMe page to seek support during this difficult time.

The Hamlet-Jolley family’s story serves as a reminder of the unexpected twists life can take and the resilience needed to navigate through adversity. It highlights the importance of routine health check-ups and the unwavering support of loved ones in times of crisis.
