A devastating house fire in Swansea claimed the lives of a father and his three-year-old son, as reported by Wales Online. Naemat Lawa Esmael, aged 51, and his son Muhammed Esmael tragically lost their lives in the fire that occurred on July 1, 2023, at their home in Gonhil, West Cross. Assistant coroner Kirsten Heaven, while offering condolences to the family, commended the bravery of Sharmeen Ahmed, Mr Esmael’s wife and Muhammed’s mother, for her testimony during the hearing. Describing the harrowing events, Ms Ahmed recounted how she heard a noise from upstairs and upon investigating, saw the fire in her daughter’s bedroom. She mentioned that her husband bravely entered the room to save their son but was unable to do so, leading to him jumping out of a window to escape the blaze.
The inquest revealed that unauthorised electrical alterations had been made to the property before the fire, indicating poor workmanship by an unskilled individual. The presence of extension leads plugged into one another and placed inside a cabinet near a games console raised concerns about fire safety standards. Despite the property having smoke alarms, they did not sound during the fire, prompting questions about their effectiveness.
Following the detailed investigation, the coroner concluded that while the exact cause of the fire could not be determined, it was likely electrical in origin.
