Dad sent sexual messages to police decoy while on National Express bus

An incident that took place on a National Express coach has caught widespread attention after a father engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a person he believed to be a 12-year-old girl. The man, identified as James Roberts, was actually communicating with an undercover police officer posing as a minor. Roberts, who has a two-year-old daughter, expressed feelings of shame and embarrassment over his actions during the court trial.

The prosecutor revealed that Roberts initiated contact with what he believed to be an 18-year-old girl on the RandoChat app, only to discover the profile was a decoy operated by law enforcement. Despite being informed that the person on the other side was 12 years old, Roberts continued the conversation, discussing sexual topics and even mentioning the exchange of nude photographs. Shockingly, he also confessed to engaging in similar conversations with a 14-year-old girl.

The revelation that these inappropriate conversations took place while Roberts was travelling on a National Express bus from Gatwick Airport to west Wales added another layer of concern to the case. When the police visited Roberts at his home in Pembrokeshire, he initially evaded their questions and claimed he had sent his mobile phone for repair to Samsung without providing concrete details.

During the sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, Roberts, who had no prior criminal record, admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child. His barrister, Hannah George, highlighted that her client was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder due to past bullying at school and struggled with expressing his emotions. She mentioned that Roberts had lost his job as a consequence of the stigma from the conviction.

Judge Paul Thomas KC emphasised the severity of the situation, pointing out that Roberts, being a father himself, should reflect on how he would feel if a similar conversation took place with his own daughter in the future. Despite receiving a suspended prison sentence of 30 weeks, Roberts was ordered to participate in a sex offenders programme and a rehabilitation course. Additionally, he will be on the sex offenders register for the next decade.

The case of James Roberts serves as a sombre reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals, particularly minors, from such explicit and harmful interactions. Such incidents underscore the critical role of law enforcement in monitoring and apprehending individuals who seek to exploit others, especially the most innocent in our society.
