Dad sentenced to at least 15 years in prison for killing daughter in a ‘spur of the moment’ attack in the kitchen
A father has been handed a life sentence for the murder of his teenage daughter, after fatally stabbing her in the heart with a kitchen knife. Scarlett Vickers, aged 14, endured a single stab wound that reached a depth of 4 inches (11 cm) into her chest. The court was informed that her father, Simon Vickers, aged 50, alleged that Scarlett was accidentally stabbed during a ‘freak incident’ while in the kitchen of their residence in Darlington, Co Durham, last July. He claimed that they were engaging in a playful scuffle that tragically turned lethal. Nevertheless, Vickers provided conflicting accounts to the authorities, including one where he claimed the knife was unintentionally thrown during their play. Today, Vickers was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 15 years set, deducting the 217 days he had spent in custody awaiting trial. During the sentencing, Judge Mr. Justice Cotter highlighted that Vickers had consistently lied about the events leading up to Scarlett’s death in the kitchen. The judge stated that Vickers, despite not intending to kill, had a motive to cause severe harm to his beloved daughter in a moment of rage. The murder weapon used was identified by Nicholas Lumley KC, who mentioned that both Vickers and Scarlett’s mother, Sarah Hall, were serving life sentences due to the irreparable loss of their only child.
