Council removes parking sign on major Cardiff roundabout

Cardiff Council recently removed a road sign that allowed drivers to park at restricted hours on one of the busiest roundabouts in the city. Despite the council’s directive years ago to disregard the sign, indicating parking restrictions, the single yellow line and sign remained in place at Gabalfa Interchange. Typically, these markings suggest permissible parking at specific times of the day. The council had promised the installation of double yellow lines to clarify the no-parking policy, but seven years later, the single yellow lines persist.

Even as of September 16, the road sign indicating parking restrictions from 8 am to 6:30 pm on weekdays and Saturdays was still standing. A spokesperson from Cardiff Council explained that a Traffic Regulation Order prohibits parking and loading at Gabalfa Interchange, highlighting the safety concerns posed by parked vehicles in such a location without pedestrian access. The removal of the redundant sign was deemed necessary to prevent dangerous obstructions to traffic flow.

Gabalfa Interchange, known for its heavy traffic, saw approximately £70,000 invested in safety improvements in 2013 following a series of accidents. Despite this, recent data shows ongoing incidents, including a collision in January 2024. Crash Map UK recorded three incidents at the interchange between 2018 and 2019.

The significance of the single yellow lines as a parking restriction indicator in the UK was underscored by the ongoing confusion surrounding parking permissions at Gabalfa Interchange. With safety remaining a top priority, Cardiff Council’s actions to address this issue reflect a commitment to efficient traffic management and road safety in the city.
