Coronation Street star dies aged 86

Coronation Street star Geoffrey Hinsliff has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family. Hinsliff was known for his role as taxi driver Donald “Don” Brennan in the popular ITV soap opera during the 1980s and 1990s, where he was particularly recognised for his character’s romantic involvement with Ivy Tilsley, played by Lynne Perrie. Apart from his work on Coronation Street, Hinsliff had roles in various television series and films such as Doctor Who, Brass, A Bridge Too Far, and Heartbeat. His family mentioned that he succumbed to a short illness at home, surrounded by loved ones.

In a heartfelt statement, Hinsliff’s wife Judith and daughters Gaby and Sophie described him as a restless, curious, adventurous, and humorous individual who cherished family above all else. Colleague Helen Worth, who portrayed Gail Platt on Coronation Street, expressed her sadness at the loss of Hinsliff and praised his on-screen chemistry with Lynne Perrie, highlighting the joy they brought to viewers over the years. Hinsliff’s character, Don Brennan, was known for storylines revolving around his tumultuous relationship with Ivy and his other romantic entanglements, including with Denise Osbourne, portrayed by Denise Black.

Hinsliff’s journey into acting began in Leeds, where he grew up in a working-class family of five. Despite leaving school at 15 without qualifications, he defied odds by securing a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) and later joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. His family emphasised his passion for education, instilled in him by an English teacher who encouraged him to pursue acting. Post his soap opera stint, Hinsliff ventured into theatre, television dramas like The Professionals and Z-Cars, and film including O Lucky Man.

In addition to his acting career, Hinsliff’s family highlighted his portrayal of George Fairchild in the ITV series Brass, reflecting on his versatility as an actor and his ability to navigate diverse roles. Survived by his wife Judith, daughters Gaby and Sophie, and four grandchildren, Hinsliff’s family expressed gratitude towards the palliative care team at Ashgate Hospice in Derbyshire and the NHS for their dedicated support.
