Corner shop from beloved sitcom ‘Open All Hours’ up for auction

The iconic corner shop from the beloved British sitcom “Open All Hours” is now up for auction, offering fans the chance to step into the shoes of the modern-day Arkwright. The convenience store known as Arkwright’s in the classic 70s show can be transformed into a retail shop reminiscent of its TV counterpart. The show, which aired from 1976 to 1985, used the exterior of the retail space on Lister Avenue in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, as the iconic corner shop. The late Ronnie Barker starred as the stuttering shopkeeper Albert Arkwright alongside Sir David Jason, known as Granville the delivery boy before his iconic role as Del Boy in “Only Fools and Horses.”

The commercial unit, currently housing Beautique hair salon, also includes two self-contained flats directly above the business space. The filming location is reported to generate nearly £17,000 per year when fully let and is situated less than a mile away from Doncaster city centre. Pugh Auctions describes the property as an ‘iconic’ location in Doncaster, anticipating significant interest from bidders in the upcoming auction on October 15th, with a guide price of £150,000.

According to Auctioneer James Vandenbrook, the retail unit’s exterior was predominantly used for filming scenes, and the buyer may have the opportunity to acquire some “Open All Hours” mementos with the sale. James highlights the property as a straightforward mixed-use residential and commercial investment, with its association with the popular sitcom potentially adding to its appeal. The shop front, renowned for its cluttered appearance on TV, holds nostalgic value for fans of the show.

The auctioneer reflects on the property’s local significance, noting its recognition within the community as the set of “Open All Hours.” He emphasises that while the shop unit may be small in reality compared to its on-screen portrayal, its iconic status is undeniable. The prospect of owning a piece of television history, combined with its investment potential, makes this auction a unique opportunity for buyers looking to own a piece of British television heritage.
