Complaints surge as Ant and Dec’s I’m A Celebrity jokes spark backlash

Complaints have surged following Ant and Dec’s I’m A Celebrity jokes, causing a backlash amongst viewers. The popular ITV show, which returned just over a week ago, has prompted 70 complaints to Ofcom over the hosts’ humour. Some fans were unimpressed with the jokes made by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, particularly about the Bible and Christian beliefs. This came after Reverend Richard Coles entered the Australian jungle, joining Love Island star Maura Higgins. During live broadcasts, Ant and Dec were seen using prayer hand gestures with orchestral music when referring to Richard. In one instance during an eating trial with Maura and Richard, Dec quipped, “More tea vicar?” Post-trial, back in the studio, Dec labelled the ordeal ‘unholy’, with Ant adding ‘Bum-holey’. In Tuesday night’s show, Ant delivered a faux sermon live, with Dec joking about Richard waking up. Richard, who was ordained in 2005, has been on a journey from Roman Catholicism in 1991 to rejoining the Church of England a decade later. Ant did not hold back during the spin-off show ‘I’m A Celebrity…Unpacked’, providing a sharp five-word verdict on Richard. Ant described Maura as someone injecting fun into the camp, contrasting her with Richard’s serene and grounded presence. Richard’s presence in the camp sparked controversy after a risqué comment about intimacy with royalty. During a conversation with GK Barry, Richard humorously commented on royalty’s prowess in bed, leaving viewers both stunned and amused. Viewers took to the comments section expressing their amusement and curiosity, with many praising Richard for his open and lighthearted responses. GK also raised questions about Richard’s sexuality in relation to his faith, to which Richard responded openly and comfortably, highlighting his confidence and self-assurance. Despite the humour sparking complaints, many fans appreciated Richard’s humour and candidness, showcasing a positive response to his presence in the camp. The show continues to attract attention and mixed reactions, with Richard’s dynamic and engaging personality adding depth and intrigue to the I’m A Celebrity experience.
