A company in Wales has been hit with a hefty fine of £400,000 after a worker lost his leg in a workplace incident. Mark Hughes, 53, suffered life-changing injuries when a pack of wast MDF sheets, weighing approximately 350kg, fell from a trailer and crushed his left leg at the Kronospan Limited factory in Chirk, near Wrexham. The incident, which occurred on March 31, 2021, led to Mr Hughes having his leg amputated below the knee, forcing him to make significant lifestyle adjustments.
Following the devastating incident, Mr Hughes shared, “My injury has changed everything in my life, it is like somebody dropped a bomb on our life and never picked up the pieces. Everything now just takes a lot of planning to do and spontaneous trips do not happen anymore. I won’t go anywhere that has a lot of steps.” Despite taking two years off work, Mr Hughes has returned to Kronospan Limited on a part-time basis, expressing the challenges of adapting to a new normal post-accident.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) uncovered critical safety failures at the Kronospan site. It was found that the road where the incident occurred was poorly maintained with numerous potholes. Furthermore, there was a lack of suitable risk assessment or work systems in place regarding the handling and movement of waste MDF sheets. The HSE highlighted that had proper measures been in place, Mr Hughes’ injuries could have been prevented.
Kronospan Limited admitted to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and pleaded guilty. The company was fined £400,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,701 at Wrexham Magistrates Court on November 19, 2024. HSE inspector Marie Wheeler emphasised the preventable nature of the incident, stating, “A man has suffered truly life-changing injuries as a result of this company’s failures.” She reinforced that the organization’s lack of a risk assessment and safe work systems led to serious consequences.
