Staff members at a restaurant chain employing over 200 people have faced the unfortunate situation of not receiving their monthly salaries. The Coconut Tree, which operates nine establishments across the UK, informed its employees that it would be unable to pay their wages for the month of May due to financial struggles resulting from the high cost of goods.
“We apologise to staff affected by delays. These were caused by unforeseen costs to the business and the wages for the staff affected will be paid by 12 June,” stated a spokesperson for The Coconut Tree.
The Coconut Tree, renowned for serving Sri Lankan cuisine, has restaurants in various locations including Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol, Bournemouth, Reading, Birmingham, Cardiff, and Reading.

One anonymous employee expressed their distress, revealing that they are owed over £1,500 and are already experiencing the consequences of unpaid bills, including overdue rent. “We were not notified until the day after pay day and the email was very concerning. I worry I will not be paid for some time,” the employee said.
In the email addressed to the staff, the company acknowledged its accumulated losses and ongoing efforts to secure new funding options. “Our final battle with the bank to increase the overdraft ended in vain,” staff were informed.
Despite the challenges faced by The Coconut Tree, they remain committed to resolving the situation and ensuring that their employees receive their overdue wages.
