Brits across the nation are embracing romance this Christmas season, with festive films inspiring affectionate gestures and cherished moments. A recent survey revealed that nearly half of Brits (45%) are putting aside their British reserve during the holidays, with 30% attributing their romantic gestures to the influence of festive movies. Headlining the list of romantic Christmas movie moments is the beloved film “Love Actually,” with scenes like Jamie’s heartfelt proposal in broken Portuguese, Mark’s cue card confession of love, and Natalie and David’s mistletoe kiss ranking as the top three most beloved scenes.
Among other standout moments from popular Christmas movies include Amanda’s tearful return to Graham in “The Holiday,” Buddy and Jovie’s whimsical first date in “Elf,” and George and Mary’s phone call kiss in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The survey also highlighted “Love Actually” as the UK’s favourite romantic Christmas film (36%), followed by “The Holiday” (22%) and “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (14%). Classic films like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas” also remain timeless favourites for cosy evenings.
In addition to memorable scenes, romantic Christmas movies are also known for their iconic lines, with phrases like “To me, you are perfect” from “Love Actually,” “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings” from “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and Buddy’s cheerful confession from “Elf” resonating with audiences. To celebrate the season, Sky Cinema has teamed up with poets Donna Ashworth, Chloe Carterr and Georgie Jones to create original poems inspired by these beloved romantic festive movie moments and quotes.
The collaboration with poets aims to capture the essence of love found in Christmas classics and inspire others to embrace romance during the holiday season. Carli Kerr, MD of Marketing at Sky and Now, expressed the sentiment that movies have a unique way of inspiring heartfelt gestures and connections, evident in the joy and love sparked by these timeless films. As 40% of Brits admit to watching more romantic films in December, there’s no better time to indulge in festive favourites.
