North Wales Police (NWP) officers carried out a recent operation in Llandudno, where more than 116 motorists were pulled over for eyesight examinations and vehicle safety inspections. This initiative, known as “Operation Eyesight,” aims to ensure that both drivers’ vision and their vehicles meet legal standards for road safety.

The operation, which had previously taken place in June, faced criticism on social media, earning the nickname “Operation Overkill.” Critics argued that the operation was more focused on generating revenue rather than catching actual criminals. In response, the police force defended their actions, stating that maintaining good eyesight is crucial for safe driving.

During the recent round of checks in Llandudno, all 116 drivers passed their eyesight tests, but several vehicles were found to have various defects. Officers issued 14 Traffic Offence Reports for violations such as illegal number plates, under-inflated tyres, lack of MOT, driving without a license, anti-social behaviour, and unlawful window tints. Additionally, two vehicles were seized for lacking insurance, and another was impounded for evading the police.

Four arrests were made during the operation for offences including failing a roadside drug test, not providing a specimen for a drug test, careless driving, and failure to stop. PC Logan from the Road’s Crime Unit emphasised the importance of good eyesight for safe driving and encouraged motorists to ensure their vehicles are road-worthy, especially as winter approaches.

Looking ahead, the NWP Road’s Crime Unit plans to conduct more safety operations in the coming months to enhance road safety in North Wales. The latest enforcement under Operation Eyesight received relatively less criticism online, with more focus on demands for improved road maintenance and crackdowns on illegal activities like street racing and unlawful electric scooter usage.

As winter approaches, it is crucial for drivers to check their tyres, lights, wipers, and overall vehicle condition to ensure safe travels on the road. Keeping vehicles in good working order not only promotes road safety but also helps prevent accidents and breakdowns. The ongoing efforts by the NWP to uphold road safety standards underscore the importance of vigilance and compliance with regulations for all road users.
