Carer’s ‘brutal’ killing of ‘defenceless and alone’ 90-year-old she stole from

A carer has been found guilty of the ‘brutal’ killing of a 90-year-old woman she was meant to be caring for, shortly after being caught stealing from her. Jayne Hill, 52, hit Myra Thompson over the head with a metal flask and then smothered her to death with a pillow. The horrific incident took place on the evening of April 22 in Spital, Wirral.

Hill had been captured on camera stealing money from Mrs. Thompson a month prior to the murder. She waited outside the victim’s home until the lights in the bedroom were switched off before entering the house to carry out the heinous crime. Following her arrest, Hill was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 and a half years by the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool, Andrew Menary KC.

The judge described Hill’s actions as a calculated act of selfish motivation and an attempt at self-preservation. He emphasized the cruelty and callousness of the offence, highlighting the significant planning and pre-meditation involved. Hill was also found guilty of stealing jewellery from other elderly individuals she had been caring for.

Detective Inspector Dave Jones expressed shock at the breach of trust, stating that Hill’s actions were despicable and that justice had been served. Myra Thompson’s niece, Anne Charters, spoke out, expressing relief that the case had reached a conclusion and hoping for some closure for all those affected by the tragic events.

The sentencing of Jayne Hill serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and integrity in caregiving roles, and the devastating consequences that can result from a breach of that trust. The community mourns the loss of Myra Thompson and hopes that justice being served will provide some comfort to her grieving loved ones.
