Care home deaths major update as police reveal suspected cause

Police investigating the deaths of three people at a care home have revealed that they are looking into potential carbon monoxide poisoning as the chief line of inquiry. At Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage, emergency services were called following a report of three deaths. Dorset Police Chief Superintendent Heather Dixey has confirmed that seven people are now in hospital due to the incident. Despite this tragic event, she mentioned that there is currently no indication of danger to the wider community.

The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained, and authorities are working closely with partner agencies to determine the full circumstances of the incident. A significant multi-agency presence will continue in the area, with a police cordon established as investigations proceed. Chief Superintendent Dixey emphasised that while carbon monoxide poisoning is the primary line of inquiry, there is no immediate risk to the public.

Following a report received by police at 7:16 am which led to a major incident declaration, ambulance crews had been called to the care home two hours earlier, at 5:20 am. More than 40 vulnerable residents and staff were evacuated and taken to the All Saints Church nearby for shelter. Dorset Council expressed deep sadness over the situation and is collaborating with care home owners, Agincare, emergency services, and other agencies to support the evacuated residents with significant care needs.

According to a spokesperson for Gainsborough Care Home, additional staffing resources have been allocated to provide support after the incident in Swanage. In the facility’s latest Care Quality Commission inspection in 2021, it was rated ‘Good’ across all categories. The Swanage community has been deeply affected by these tragic deaths, and authorities are continuing their investigations to provide further clarity on this distressing incident.
