Cardiff artist uses popular American snack to craft stunning Marilyn Monroe mosaic

Cardiff artist Nathan Wyburn has brought a touch of pop culture to the art world by creating a stunning mosaic of Marilyn Monroe using an unexpected material – Pop-Tarts. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s famous silk-screen portrait, Wyburn meticulously crafted the mosaic from over 120 Pop-Tarts in his studio in Cardiff. The artwork pays homage to both the iconic actress and the 1950s pop art movement.

Devoting over 10 hours to the project, Wyburn expressed his excitement about using Pop-Tarts as a medium for his art. The vibrant mosaic of Monroe can now be viewed at a pop-up exhibition in London’s Bethnal Green. Wyburn shared his thoughts on the process, stating, “Using Pop-Tarts to create these pieces was a unique and intriguing experience that really captures the ‘true’ essence of pop art, making the ordinary extraordinary. Marilyn in particular was a real challenge to capture that signature and distinct look of hers.”

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Pop-Tarts, Kellogg’s collaborated with various artists, including Wyburn, to create unique art installations. In addition to the Monroe mosaic, the exhibition features other edible artworks that showcase the creativity and innovation of the artists involved. The gallery aims to celebrate the heritage of Pop-Tarts and provide visitors with a fun and interactive experience.

A recent survey of 2,000 individuals in the UK revealed interesting insights into art appreciation across different age groups. The survey identified Banksy as the nation’s favorite artist, followed by other renowned figures such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol. The results highlighted varying preferences and attitudes towards art among different generations, with Gen Z showing a higher level of enthusiasm for art compared to Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.

Kellogg’s senior director, Shauna Lenagh, expressed excitement about the Pop-Tart Gallery Experience and encouraged visitors to immerse themselves in the interactive displays. The exhibition, open to the public on October 25th and 26th, offers attendees the opportunity to engage with art in a fun and innovative way. Kellogg’s aims to showcase the connection between Pop-Tarts and pop art while inviting visitors to unleash their creativity through edible masterpieces.

The collaboration between Nathan Wyburn and Kellogg’s serves as a creative tribute to the iconic Marilyn Monroe and the enduring legacy of the pop art movement. Through unconventional art mediums and interactive exhibitions, the Pop-Tart Gallery Experience brings together art, culture, and imagination in a delightful and engaging manner for art enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy.
