Car Expert Reveals Day of the Week with Better MOT Pass Rate
As the peak months for MOT bookings, September and October prompt many to ensure their cars are roadworthy for their upcoming tests, according to a motoring expert. The DVSA reported a one in five failure rate for MOT tests last year. To avoid contributing to this statistic, there are simple checks drivers can perform before their MOT appointment.
Lee Caroline, owner of LJC Autospares and a scrap car specialist, highlights the significance of checking lights and signals, common culprits for MOT failures. In addition to these checks, one surprising factor that could impact the MOT outcome is the day of the week the test is scheduled. Caroline reveals that weekend bookings have a higher pass rate compared to weekdays, with Sunday boasting a success rate of 78.36% while Monday lags behind at 70.45%.
To increase the chances of passing an MOT, drivers can conduct the following five essential checks:
1. Lights and signals: 18.9% of failures result from issues in this area. Ensure all lights are functioning correctly before the test.
2. Suspension: Look out for any clunking noises or irregularities in the car’s suspension, accounting for 13% of failures.
3. Brakes: Listen for squealing noises when braking and check for any pulling to either side, as brake issues make up 10% of failures.
4. Tyres: Although less common, tyre issues contribute to 7.7% of failures. Use a 20p coin to check tyre tread depth.
5. Windscreen: Problems affecting visibility account for 7.2% of failures. Check for cracks and ensure wipers are in working order to avoid issues.
By adhering to these checks and considering the optimal day for an MOT test, drivers can enhance their chances of passing and ensure road safety.
