Bus lanes to be continued along Newport road (B4487 Rumney Hill) to Mount Pleasent Ave in bid to reduce traffic into the city.

Cardiff City has today announced plans to extend the bus lanes on Newport road in to Llanrumney in order to reduce traffic into the City and reduce our region’s reliance on the car and develop what the South East Wales Transport Commission called a “network of alternatives”.

Cardiff City spokes person Joseph King, has commented ‘We believe that extending the bus lanes going to and from the City centre along the B4487 (Rumney hill Newport Road) will encourage more people to use public transport and reduce pollution in the city and will be a valued asset in the future, especially when the changes are also made to the A48.

This will mean that Rumney hill section of Newport Rd as far as Mount Pleasant Ave will be reduce to just one lane in each direction. One angry motorist stated ‘The traffic on this road is beyond as it is, let alone the new flats and houses they are building, the extra traffic and reduced lanes will bring this side of Cardiff to utter gridlock and stand still’

Jo, who stated he doesn’t own a car himself and rides his tricycle to work each morning continued to ‘We understand this may frustrate some road users, but it will be better for all of us in the long run, we are aiming for a greener healthier city’

This comes after recent news of the A48 receiving similar treatment

A48 proposed plans for bus lanes

HE A48 between Newport and Cardiff could undergo a radical transformation under new proposals.

Lanes of the current road may be turned into bus lanes and cycle paths in a bid to improve active travel options between the two major population centers.

The proposals form part of wider plans to reduce our region’s reliance on the car and develop what the South East Wales Transport Commission called a “network of alternatives”.

That commission was set up in the wake of the Welsh Government’s decision to scrap the proposed M4 relief road, to find other ways transport could be improved and congestion alleviated on the motorway around Newport.

Work is believed to get underway as early as next week, and it is advised that there will be possible delays over the coming weeks until the work is completed.
