Serial Burglar Convicted After Targeting Unlocked Homes
A serial house burglar was recently sentenced to 876 days in prison after being caught sneaking into homes while the occupants slept, stealing items in Swansea. Kristian Evans, with a history of over 60 offences and six previous domestic burglary convictions, was apprehended after attempting to break into a house on Henrietta Street in Swansea.
Evans, aged 42, has a long history of criminal activities, spending a significant portion of his life behind bars. His advocate suggested that Evans may be institutionalised and struggle to function outside of the prison environment. During the incident on December 12th, the victim discovered missing items upon waking up, including a music speaker, leading to the realisation that an intruder had entered the property through an unlocked door.
Police investigations revealed footage from a neighbour’s video doorbell capturing a man attempting to enter homes during the early hours of the morning. The distinct jacket worn by the individual in the footage was identified as belonging to one of the housemates, leading to the suspect’s identification as Evans. Subsequent searches led to the recovery of the stolen speaker at a local pawnshop.
Evans, previously living in Mount Pleasant, Swansea, pleaded guilty to the burglary charges. His defence counsel highlighted his struggles with drug addiction and noted the challenges he faced upon release from prison. Despite this, Judge Catherine Richard condemned Evans’ actions, stating that his criminal behaviour was wasting his life and emphasised the need for him to take responsibility and reform.
With a history of offences, including multiple convictions for domestic burglary, Evans was sentenced to 876 days in prison, with a 40% custodial term before potential release on licence. His criminal past includes instances where his DNA was found at crime scenes, leading to significant prison sentences for previous break-ins.
In light of the seriousness of Evans’ crimes and his pattern of reoffending, the judge stressed the importance of rehabilitation and called on him to make positive changes. The court’s decision to impose a substantial prison sentence aims to address the repeated criminal behaviour and provide an opportunity for Evans to reflect on his actions.
