A brutal incident unfolded in Caerphilly, Wales, where a man named Samuel Roberts was sentenced for assaulting his partner after she refused to have sex with him. Roberts not only physically abused his partner but also instructed her to lie to the police about how she sustained her injuries. The disturbing details of the case were revealed during a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.
The court heard that Roberts, who has a troubling history of domestic violence and other assaults, unleashed his anger on his partner when she declined his sexual advances. The assault left the woman with several injuries, including to her lip, eye, head, and bicep. Despite Roberts’ attempts to manipulate the situation by coercing his partner into providing false information to authorities, she bravely spoke up and told the police the truth about the attack.
Roberts, a 41-year-old with a long criminal record, pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and strangulation. The prosecution highlighted his extensive history of violence, including previous convictions for GBH, affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm to a former partner, and breaches of restraining orders. The victim, in her statement to the court, expressed concerns about her safety upon Roberts’ potential release from prison, indicating her fears of his disregard for court bail conditions.
During the court proceedings, Roberts’ defence counsel acknowledged the challenge of mitigating his client’s actions given the weight of his past offences. It was revealed that Roberts was actually born in custody while his mother was on remand in the 1980s. Despite any attempts at justification, Judge Eugene Egan deemed an immediate custodial sentence necessary for Roberts, emphasising the severity of his actions and their impact on the victim.
Following the sentencing, Roberts was handed a 17-month prison term and issued a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim and her relatives for a period of at least 10 years. The judge underscored the violent and intimidating nature of Roberts’ behaviour towards his partner, affirming the necessity of protecting the victim and ensuring her safety. The case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
