Brothers destroyed man’s life in savage pub beating over girlfriend row

Two brothers from New Tredegar, Keane and Caleb Williams, were sentenced for brutally attacking a pubgoer outside the Tredegar Arms pub in James Street. The victim, Gavin McDonald, suffered skull fractures, a bleed on the brain, and a partly collapsed lung as a result of the savage beating. The attack was spurred by a baseless accusation made by Keane Williams’ girlfriend, leading the brothers to commit grievous bodily harm against McDonald. The incident was witnessed by many, with CCTV footage showing the extent of the violence.

The court heard that McDonald, who knew several people in the pub, had a brief interaction with a young woman before Keane Williams confronted him, falsely accusing him of inappropriate behaviour towards his girlfriend. Despite efforts to prevent an altercation, the Williams brothers followed McDonald outside, where they, along with another man, assaulted him, causing severe injuries that required extensive medical treatment.

McDonald’s life was dramatically altered by the attack as he struggled with physical and mental health issues post-surgery. The incident left him unable to work, dependent on family for care, and suffering memory problems and confusion. McDonald even had to sell his house out of fear for his safety, highlighting the profound impact of the assault on his life.

In court, Keane and Caleb Williams were sentenced to three years and 32 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in the attack. Despite their previous criminal records, they showed little remorse for their actions. The third perpetrator, John Garnett, received a suspended sentence along with community service and other requirements to address his involvement in the assault.

The judge, Lucy Crowther, expressed her disdain for the violent behaviour of the attackers, emphasising the lasting consequences on McDonald and his family. The courtroom proceedings underscored the seriousness of the crime and the need for accountability. The story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of senseless acts of violence on individuals and communities.
