A tragic incident has occurred where a five-year-old British boy lost his life after being discovered at the bottom of a hotel swimming pool during a family holiday in Egypt. Kelan Logan-Derench, hailing from Carhampton Road in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham, passed away at the El Nile Hospital in Cairo on November 25 last year after being rescued from the water. The Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court determined in a written verdict that Kelan, known as a “cheeky, mischievous, happy little boy” by a family friend, died due to an accident.
The inquest report revealed that Kelan was on vacation with his family at the Mirette Hotel in Hurghada when he was found unresponsive at the bottom of the hotel pool without his armbands on around 12.05 pm. Despite efforts to revive him, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital, with the cause of death documented as drowning. A GoFundMe page set up by Serena Whitehead, a friend of Kelan’s mother, raised nearly £20,000 to repatriate his body to the UK and cover funeral expenses. The page mentioned that Kelan was on holiday with his mother, elder sister, and grandmother and tragically lost his life just a day after their arrival.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, especially when families are traveling with young children. It is crucial for parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. Our thoughts are with Kelan’s family during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of their beloved little boy.
The community has come together to support the family during this time, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion in the face of such a heartbreaking loss. As the details of this incident continue to unfold, it is a stark reminder to cherish every moment with loved ones and prioritise safety, particularly when near water bodies. May Kelan Logan-Derench rest in peace, and may his family find comfort and strength in the midst of their grief.
