A Bristol City football hooligan was apprehended in Cardiff due to his distinct ginger hair. The incident occurred when Mackenzie Bailey, a Bristol City supporter, was believed to have successfully thrown a can of alcohol at a pub in the city centre. However, his ginger hair made him stand out in the away section at the Cardiff City match later that day, leading to his arrest during halftime at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecutor, Mike Curry, presented footage of the disorder that took place on February 15, showing Bailey throwing a can at the O’Neill’s pub signage, causing alcohol to spray out upon impact. Despite being moved on by police, Bailey’s appearance made him easily identifiable at the stadium. Bailey, 18, admitted to the public order offence during the court hearing. His solicitor, Maxine Twynam, expressed Bailey’s regret over his actions and highlighted his positive attributes as a family-oriented individual who is committed to his work.
Bailey’s employer commended his work ethic and high standards of performance over the three years of employment, emphasizing his positive contributions to the business. The court was informed that Bailey’s family was disappointed with his behaviour, and his mother expressed a desire for a football banning order to be imposed as a consequence. The court considered Bailey’s previous caution for a similar offence and his overall display of immaturity in the sentencing process.
Presiding Justice Mark Hughes ultimately imposed a three-year football banning order on Bailey, along with a £500 fine, a £200 victim services surcharge, and £85 in prosecution costs. The judge underscored the need for Bailey to reflect on his actions and embrace a more responsible approach in the future. Bailey’s passport was also required to be surrendered during specified match times involving Bristol City and England outside the UK.
The disorder preceding the Championship 1-1 draw between the teams raised concerns about the management of Bristol City fans’ travel to the stadium, prompting discussions on potential bubble restrictions. The incident shed light on the importance of maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved in sporting events.
