Bristol Airport is set to undergo a major expansion as it reveals plans for a longer runway and long-haul flights to major destinations like America and the Middle East. The ambitious project also includes increasing the number of aircraft stands, from 38 to 48, eliminating the need for passengers to be bussed to planes. Additionally, there will be enhancements in car parking and the terminal building with extensions at both ends, as part of the strategy to boost passenger numbers from 12 million to 15 million annually.
The airport’s owners, reportedly seeking to sell their stake in the company running the airport’s operations, have launched a two-month consultation on these expansion plans ahead of submitting a planning application early next year. This move comes after the airport won permission, following a four-year legal battle, to increase its capacity from nine million to 12 million passengers per year. However, the expansion is expected to face opposition from local residents in north Somerset due to concerns about issues like night flights, noise, and increased traffic congestion.
As discussions on the expansion continue, environmentalists are raising alarms over the potential environmental impact of the project. With air travel being a significant contributor to carbon emissions and global warming, the proposed expansion of Bristol Airport could exacerbate these concerns. The proposed development includes extending the runway by 150 metres to accommodate larger planes for transcontinental flights to destinations such as the Middle East, the US, and Canada. Bristol Airport aims to meet the demand for longer-haul routes while improving operational efficiency for existing aircraft types. Plans also include the extension of the runway towards the A38 and Felton Common, along with considerations for additional transport infrastructure like bus lanes to enhance connectivity.
Despite facing opposition from groups like the Bristol Airport Action Network, which criticises the expansion proposals as detrimental to the local community and environment, the airport is pushing ahead with its plans. The airport’s chief executive, Dave Lees, emphasised the importance of air travel, noting a resurgence in travel demand post-pandemic. Bristol Airport’s expansion aims to cater to this growing demand, projecting to accommodate increasing numbers of passengers up to the year 2040.
