Brains beer, the iconic Welsh brewery, has announced a change in leadership as Jon Bridge steps down as the current CEO. The family-owned business, known for its long history dating back to 1882, has confirmed that Nick Payne will take over as the new managing director from January onwards. This transition comes at a pivotal time for Brains, as they have undergone significant downsizing in recent years, including leasing the majority of their pub estate to Marston’s in 2020 and selling off freehold interests in pubs to Song Capital.
In their most recent financial reports up to April 2023, Brains posted revenues of £9.3m with a workforce of approximately 30 employees, a notable decrease from pre-Covid times when revenues were around £120m and employed over 2,000 people. Despite these changes, Brains has maintained its brewery operations in Cardiff Bay. Jon Bridge, who has been with the company since 2021 and previously held key roles in retail and hospitality sectors, expressed his pride in leading the Welsh brand and expressed confidence in the company’s future under Nick’s leadership.
Richard Westwood, the chair of SA Brain and Co, commended Jon for his strategic leadership and contributions to the brewery’s success, highlighting his integrity and transparency. Nick Payne, with over 20 years of experience in the brewing industry, including roles at Cygnet Gin, Budweiser Budvar UK, and Marston’s, shared his excitement about joining Brains and overseeing its operations, branding, and sales. He emphasised the significance of Brains as an iconic beer brand and looks forward to contributing to its growth in the coming years.
The appointment of Nick Payne signifies a new chapter for Brains beer, marking a period of change and expansion for the historic brewery. With a fresh perspective and extensive industry experience, Nick is poised to lead Brains into a successful future, building on the foundation laid by Jon Bridge and steering the company towards continued growth and innovation. As Brains beer evolves under new leadership, the legacy of this beloved Welsh brand is set to endure and thrive in the ever-changing landscape of the brewing industry.
