An 11-year-old boy from Caerphilly has undergone a remarkable recovery journey after a terrifying 8ft fall outside his home last year. Ioan Watts, who was just starting high school at the time of the accident, suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for three weeks. Following emergency brain surgery, Ioan had to re-learn basic skills like walking and talking. The Wales Air Ambulance played a crucial role in saving his life, with two critical care teams rushing to his aid on that fateful day.
The medics from the Wales Air Ambulance worked tirelessly to stabilise Ioan before transferring him to a specialist hospital for further treatment. One of the medics involved in Ioan’s rescue, Jez James, was so moved by Ioan’s recovery that he decided to join him in climbing Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales. Jez described Ioan as one of the sickest patients he had encountered and was amazed by the progress Ioan made in his recovery journey.
Ioan’s determination and resilience have been an inspiration to many, including the medics who helped save his life. Despite the challenges he faced, Ioan decided to give back to the charities that supported him by raising money through his Pen y Fan hike. With the support of his family and the Wales Air Ambulance, Ioan successfully completed the challenging hike and raised funds for the Wales Air Ambulance and the Child Brain Injury Trust.
