A driver in Wales was found in possession of £1,200 worth of cocaine after trying to escape from the police. Aaron Griffiths, 29, was driving a BMW through Aberdare on August 26 when police attempted to stop his vehicle. Griffiths fled but was later apprehended on foot near Cwmdare Road. During a sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, it was revealed that Griffiths confessed to having half an ounce of cocaine in his possession. Further investigation led to the discovery of a wallet containing £400 in cash in his vehicle, as well as 14.7g of cocaine worth between £600 and £1,200, and £1,300 in cash at his home.
In addition to the drugs and cash, Griffiths’ mobile phone was seized and found to contain messages indicating his involvement in the supply of cocaine and cannabis between July 2020 and August 2023. Griffiths, residing on Bwllfa Road, Cwmdare, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs and being concerned in the supply of class A and B drugs. Despite having one prior conviction for possessing cannabis, Griffiths was given a suspended two-year prison sentence by Judge Jeremy Jenkins. The judge emphasised the seriousness of dealing in class A drugs and the rare opportunity being granted to Griffiths with the suspended sentence.
As part of his sentencing, Griffiths was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, attend rehabilitation activity requirement days, and pay £150 in costs. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of drug-related crimes in the area, reminding the public of the consequences associated with drug trafficking. The incident serves as a cautionary tale of the legal repercussions individuals face when involved in drug-related activities.
