A new commemorative blue plaque scheme has been introduced in Neath Port Talbot, shining a light on notable individuals, locations, and events throughout the county borough. The initiative was given the green light by councillors during a cabinet meeting in October, emphasising its significance within the council’s Heritage Strategy for the years 2024 to 2039. The scheme officially kicked off in January, with the local authority setting aside a budget for two plaques annually, alongside the option for local groups or individuals to sponsor their own blue plaque.
Fascinatingly, the process involves submitting nominations online to the Heritage NPT Team’s selection panel, whose recommendations are then presented to cabinet members for the final decision. The goal is to enhance public awareness and appreciation of the area’s history by providing information, education, and celebrations through these blue plaques. Moreover, future activities like blue plaque trails and QR code links to detailed online stories are on the cards, enriching the understanding of significant figures, places, and moments in Neath Port Talbot’s collective heritage.

The plaques themselves will be meticulously crafted by ceramicist Ned Heywood at his studio in Chepstow, known for producing similar plaques for esteemed organisations such as English Heritage and Historic England. The submission window for council-funded applications opens from April 1 to September 30, 2025, while self-funded plaque applications started in early January.
