Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden has bravely shared her battle with stage three breast cancer, revealing her determination to make the most of life after enduring a tough treatment journey. In her upcoming BBC documentary, “Strictly Amy: Cancer And Me,” the professional dancer delves into her health struggles, hopes for a family, and her commitment to dancing post-diagnosis last year.
Following a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Amy announced she is currently cancer-free based on recent medical assessments. After skipping the previous season, the 34-year-old is gearing up for her return to the BBC dance competition for its 20th series, as reported by the Mirror. Reflecting on the lessons learnt during her ordeal, the Welsh dancer shared, “Go grab life.” She drew inspiration from a fellow cancer warrior who passed away during her treatment, driving her to embrace life with the same zeal.
Amy candidly discussed the physical changes she underwent during treatment. From losing her hair and gaining weight to enduring various medications, she highlighted that appearances are inconsequential compared to the inner strength and resilience that shine through. She emphasised the importance of cherishing every moment in life.
Discovering her cancer just before her honeymoon, Amy decided to document her journey, similar to her earlier experience sharing her struggle with Crohn’s disease. Bringing light to her fertility challenges post-diagnosis, Amy hopes her story will educate and support others facing similar issues.
With the aspiration of returning to Strictly as her motivation through gruelling treatments, Amy stressed the significance of early detection and self-awareness. Despite the uncertainties and fears, the prospect of joining the show once more fuelled her determination. Amy highlights the necessity of supporting each other through tough times and advocating for proactive health practices.
Navigating through recovery, Amy acknowledged the personal nature of overcoming cancer and the varied ways individuals cope. Having a clear goal, like returning to dance, was pivotal in maintaining her resolve and purpose. Through her journey, Amy hopes to raise awareness, encourage personal health checks, and empower others to face challenges with resilience and positivity.
