Strictly Come Dancing’s Aljaz Skorjanec has shared his struggles with a persistent health issue that has spanned 16 years. The professional dancer, known for his appearances on the BBC show, spoke candidly about his battle with psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by painful and itchy scales on the body. Aljaz, now 34, revealed that he first noticed symptoms at the age of 18, with a formal diagnosis coming two years later. Psoriasis can lead to flaky skin patches and the formation of scales that are both itchy and sore according to the NHS.
In a 2022 interview, Aljaz described how the condition took a toll on his confidence, leading him to conceal it even during his time on Strictly Come Dancing. Married to fellow Strictly professional and It Takes Two presenter Janette Manrara, Aljaz recalled the onset of his condition, saying, “When I was about 18, I stopped dancing competitively, and it was a huge change in my life.” The dancer noted that stress triggered the condition, and it started with patches on his knees that later spread to his elbows.
After consultation with a dermatologist and the use of steroid creams, Aljaz’s condition initially improved. However, upon leaving home at 20, he experienced a worsening of symptoms, including patches appearing on his face. Despite seeking help from around 20 specialists, undergoing allergy tests, and trying numerous products, Aljaz found no lasting solution. Desperate for relief, he even received injections directly into the affected areas.
Aljaz admitted to concealing his condition both on the dance show and in daily life, expressing how appearances are essential in his line of work. He further revealed his reluctance to wear short-sleeved shirts or shorts, except when in warm locations. Psoriasis symptoms can vary from dry, scaly patches on the skin to itching and soreness, with most cases involving recurring flare-ups. Aljaz’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals living with chronic skin conditions like psoriasis.
If you suspect you may have psoriasis, it is advisable to consult a GP for a proper diagnosis and management plan. Psoriasis can impact individuals both physically and emotionally, highlighting the need for support and understanding for those affected by the condition.
