BBC Sounds launches Radio 3 Unwind showcasing classical music

BBC Sounds has unveiled a new radio stream called BBC Radio 3 Unwind, dedicated to showcasing a variety of classical music. The station’s schedule is designed to promote relaxation and focus, as part of BBC’s initiative to introduce new extensions to its popular radio stations. The programming will highlight music by contemporary composers, particularly those from the UK. Additionally, it will feature emerging artist-composers and talents from BBC Introducing.

The lineup includes live performances and specially recorded pieces from the BBC Orchestras And Choirs and Radio 3’s New Generation Artists. Experts and academics from fields like psychology, neuroscience, and mental health will contribute to the station, offering insights and advice. DJ Edith Bowman will host Cinematic Soundtracks in the late afternoons from Monday to Saturday, while Dr Sian Williams will present the daily mid-morning show, Classical Unwind, featuring input from specialists like neuroscientist Professor Catherine Loveday.

Irish musician Niall Breslin will lead Classical Wind Down from 6 pm to 9 pm, and on Sundays, composer Afrodeutsche will introduce listeners to contemporary UK classical composers on her show, Soundwaves. The station will also offer programmes like Ultimate Calm with multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds, and The Music And Meditation Podcast featuring musician Nao and Izzy Judd. BBC Radio 3 Unwind will include music mixes such as Mindful Mix, Piano Focus, and The Sleeping Forecast.

Sam Jackson, the controller of BBC Radio 3 and BBC Proms, expressed excitement about the launch of BBC Radio 3 Unwind, emphasising the station’s role in offering listeners a space for relaxation and escape with its carefully curated programming. He highlighted the significance of classical music in providing a counterbalance to the fast-paced, technology-driven modern life, while also supporting new talents and introducing unique music to audiences.

Earlier in the year, BBC revealed plans to introduce new music extensions for Radio 1, Radio 2, and Radio 3. BBC Radio 3 Unwind will kick off at 6 am on Monday and will be accessible on BBC Sounds, offering a diverse range of classical music content to listeners seeking tranquillity and artistic stimulation in their daily lives.

BBC Radio 3 Unwind’s launch of a new stream dedicated to classical music, specifically focusing on contemporary composers and emerging talents, aims to provide listeners with a unique space for relaxation and musical exploration. Through carefully curated programming and expert contributions, the station seeks to offer a diverse range of classical music content, setting itself apart as a special gateway into the world of classical music for its audience.
