Pettigrew Bakeries, a renowned family-run bakery, has announced plans to open its fourth shop in the vibrant city of Cardiff. The bakery is set to open its new location in Rhiwbina, an area recently lauded as one of the top 25 places to live in the UK by The Times. This new shop will join the bakery’s existing three sites situated across Cardiff. The first Pettigrew Bakery opened its doors nine years ago across from Victoria Park in Canton. Since then, the bakery has expanded to include a shop in Roath, another in Castle Arcade in the city centre, and a presence at the Cardiff Farmers Market. The new Rhiwbina location is scheduled to open in May of this year, although the exact opening date is yet to be confirmed.

The new shop in Rhiwbina will operate seven days a week, with opening hours from 7.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 2pm on Sundays, or until all goods are sold out. The owners have assured customers that the Rhiwbina shop will deliver the same Pettigrew experience, offering freshly baked sourdough, popular pastries, sweet bakes, and customer favorites like the Chicken Mayo Parmesan baguettes. In addition to their existing menu, the new location will introduce a range of hot lunch specials for customers who wish to dine in.

David Le Masurier, the founder and co-owner of Pettigrew Bakery, expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture, stating, “This marks a significant moment for us. For the past seven years, we’ve been a fixture at the Rhiwbina Farmers Market every Friday — come rain or shine — but now, thanks to the unwavering support of the local community, we’re making Rhiwbina our permanent home and joining a wonderful community of independent businesses that make this village so special.”

During the challenging times faced by the independent hospitality and slow food sector, Pettigrew Bakery aims to innovate and grow to sustain its business and support its team. David added, “Our pricing reflects the true cost of quality ingredients, craft, and care — not margins for shareholders — and our community continues to show us that they understand and support that.” The bakery plans to maintain its presence at the Rhiwbina Farmers Market while also expanding its outreach through events and pop-ups across Cardiff, facilitated by their new all-electric delivery van.

The decision to establish a permanent presence in Rhiwbina was spurred by the warm reception received from the local community during the lockdown period. The bakery’s deliveries became a familiar sight in the area, strengthening the bond between Pettigrew Bakery and the residents of CF14. The owners are eager to integrate themselves into the daily life of Rhiwbina while continuing to contribute to the vibrant local food scene.

The new Pettigrew Bakery in Rhiwbina signals a continuation of the bakery’s commitment to quality, community, and innovation. With its expanding range of offerings, dedicated customer base, and emphasis on sustainability, Pettigrew Bakery is poised to make a positive impact in the culinary landscape of Cardiff. The opening of this new shop represents not only a milestone for the bakery but also a testament to the resilience and adaptability of independent businesses in the face of adversity.
