E-commerce giant Amazon has announced its plans to hire hundreds of seasonal staff for the busy Christmas trading period at its fulfilment centre in Swansea. The US-owned company is embarking on a recruitment drive to fill over 15,000 seasonal positions across the UK. Seasonal employees in Swansea can expect to earn a minimum of £13.50 per hour, with the rate potentially rising to £14.50 depending on the location. While the exact number of seasonal jobs in Wales has not been disclosed by Amazon, it is estimated to be around 500, similar to the previous year.

Amazon has made a significant investment of £550 million towards increased pay for its operational staff in the UK since 2022, resulting in a 35% rise in hourly wages over a two-year period. Anil Verma, the UK operations director at Amazon, stated, “We anticipate year-round preparations for the festive season, and we are thrilled to offer over 15,000 positions this year across the UK. Our seasonal workers are essential in delivering an exceptional experience for our customers.” Verma expressed enthusiasm in welcoming back returning seasonal employees and new team members.

In Swansea, Amazon currently employs 1,400 individuals, with an additional 600 working at delivery stations in Newport, Port Talbot, and Deeside. As one of the largest private sector employers in the UK, Amazon’s workforce comprises 75,000 employees nationwide. Last month, the company revealed a 9.8% raise in the starting pay for frontline operation workers, with the starting wage in Wales now standing at £28,080 per year.
