Welsh Food and Drink Shine at the Great British Food Awards
The Great British Food Awards have recently unveiled their winners, with several Welsh products taking home prestigious gold awards. Celebrating and promoting authentic British food and drink, the scheme recognises a variety of products such as cheese, chocolate, jam, liqueur, beer, and lager. In the Christmas specials dessert category, Bevsbeenbaking from Wrexham clinched the gold award for its Penderyn Whiskey and chocolate fruit cake. Moving on to the free-from product category, two Welsh companies excelled, with Belle Vue Tea Room Ltd from Newport impressing the judges with Jan’s Generously Spiced Bara Brith, and Bubbling Stove from Welshpool wowing them with its Decadent Dark Chocolate Brownie.
The cider category, judged by the renowned French chef Raymond Blanc OBE, saw Hallet’s Cider from Newport claiming the top spot for its Medium Bottle Cider. Radnor Preserves, based in Newtown, Powys, secured two gold awards this year. Their Classic Seville Orange Marmalade triumphed in the marmalade category, while their Raspberry & Crushed Cardamom Preserve shone in the jam category.
Castle Dairies’ Welsh Spreadable Butter, hailing from Caerphilly, emerged victorious in the dairy category. Additionally, Barti Ddu’s Barti Spiced Rum stole the show, being named the best rum of the year. The company expressed their joy on Facebook, announcing, “Barti Spiced Rum has been awarded ‘Best Rum’ at the Great British Food Awards 2024!”
In the regional winners’ category for Wales, Grounds for Good took the prestigious title. This company, founded in 2020 by Dr. Rosie Oretti, blends sustainability and creativity by producing gins, vodka, and gifts made from used coffee grounds to reduce waste.
