The Met Office has released the list of storm names for 2024/25. The weather experts release a new list of names each September, which then runs to late August the following year. It is to coincide with the start of autumn and the end of summer, when the likelihood of low-pressure systems and the potential for named storms increase.
The list of names is compiled jointly between Met Éireann, the Met Office and Dutch national weather forecasting service KNMI. The Met Office writes on its website: “In the UK a storm will be named when it has the potential to cause disruption or damage which could result in an amber or red warning. This is based on our National Severe Weather Warnings service, which is a combination of both the impact the weather may have, and the likelihood of those impacts occurring.”
It adds that when the criteria for naming a storm are met, either the Met Office, Met Éireann or KNMI can name a storm, taking the name from the latest list in alphabetical order. The storm names for 2024/25 are as follows: Ashley Bert Conall Darragh Éowyn Floris Gerben Hugo Izzy James Kayleigh Lewis Mavis Naoise Otje Poppy Rafi Sayuri Tilly Vivienne Wren
If your name isn’t on the list and you’d like to see a storm named after you, there is a way where you can suggest your own name in future. The Met Office says on its website that everyone is welcome to suggest names for future consideration by emailing [email protected] or through an online form available on their website.
So, if you fancy the idea of having a storm that shares your name, why not give it a shot and suggest your name for a future storm designation? It could be a unique way to leave your mark on the weather map!
