Thousands of food enthusiasts flocked to Abergavenny on Saturday, September 21, to kick off the annual food festival in the Monmouthshire town. The festival, now in its 26th year, features a diverse range of food from across Wales and beyond, with well-known stallholders like Alex Gooch and La Grande Bouffe showcasing their culinary delights.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Abergavenny Castle, the festival spans six venues in the town centre. With 190 exhibitors and caterers, guests can enjoy guest chef demonstrations in the Market Hall, cooking-over-fire sessions, as well as talks, debates, and children’s activities in the castle grounds. The event, operating on a not-for-profit basis, took place on September 21 and 22.

On the first day of the festival, visitors were treated to a demonstration by chef Dina Macki, presenting recipes from her new book “Bahari” that celebrate her British-Omani-Zanzibari heritage. Additionally, fire-cook specialists Sam Evans and Shauna Guinn from Hangfire BBQ shared their unique culinary skills, along with a chef demonstration by Chris Harrod from the acclaimed restaurant, The Whitebrook in Monmouth.

Despite initial forecasts of heavy rain, festival-goers enjoyed pleasant weather, immersing themselves in the array of food and activities. From delicious food tastings to cooking demonstrations, the festival catered to all ages, with ample opportunities to indulge in new flavours and enjoy the picturesque views of the castle.

Local cafes bustled with foodies while the aroma of various cuisines filled the air, creating a vibrant and delicious atmosphere. As visitors meandered through the festival grounds, they sampled delights from the various exhibitors, creating a convivial and delectable experience for all.

The festival’s success is a testament to its enduring popularity and the community’s love for good food and great company. With its wide range of offerings and picturesque setting, the Abergavenny Food Festival continues to delight visitors year after year, showcasing the best of Welsh and international cuisine in a celebration of food and culture.
