Wizz Air has recently announced plans to introduce low-cost flights from the UK to Saudi Arabia, with fares starting at £134.99 for the new route. The airline aims to operate flights from Gatwick Airport to Jeddah beginning on March 31 next year. These flights will be facilitated by the Airbus A321XLR, a high-tech aircraft renowned for its long-range capabilities, thanks to its extra-large fuel tanks that allow for non-stop flights of up to 11 hours.
According to Wizz Air’s CEO, Jozsef Varadi, the Airbus A321XLR is a cost-efficient aircraft with 239 seats and enhanced fuel efficiency, consuming approximately 30% less fuel per passenger compared to previous models. Despite the medium-haul nature of the journey, the aircraft does not feature reclining seats, potentially impacting passenger comfort during the seven-hour flight to Jeddah and vice versa. The flights are set to commence daily from March 31, 2025, marking Wizz Air’s longest route yet.
Saudi Arabia has been actively promoting tourism, with a recent campaign titled ‘This Land is Calling’ aimed at attracting international tourists to explore the country’s attractions. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has set ambitious targets for tourism to become a major contributor to the economy by 2030, with a projected 150 million visitors annually. However, the country’s human rights record, including executions and treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, may deter some potential travellers.
Wizz Air’s expansion plans include utilising the Airbus A321XLR to connect distant destinations and cultures, with a focus on offering competitive fares to passengers. The airline’s commitment to operating from London Gatwick reflects its strategic growth at the airport since 2020. The introduction of the Jeddah route signifies a significant milestone for both Wizz Air and Gatwick, with the airline playing a key role in the airport’s success.
As part of its strategy to enhance its flight network, Wizz Air aims to provide unparalleled fares and connectivity for customers, emphasising the opportunities presented by the new route to Jeddah. The airline’s investment in the Airbus A321XLR underscores its commitment to offering efficient and affordable travel options for passengers. With preparations underway for the inaugural flight to Saudi Arabia, Wizz Air looks towards a new chapter of expanding its operations and serving diverse destinations.
