Councillors in Bridgend have greenlit an extra £4 million in funding from the Welsh Government for the ongoing Porthcawl Grand Pavilion renovation project. The decision was made during a recent full council meeting, where members agreed to allocate the additional capital funds towards the Porthcawl Regeneration Programme. This move will push the total project budget to £20 million, enabling the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl to advance to its next phase.

The revamped plans, backed by the UK Government’s Levelling-Up Fund, include preserving and restoring the building’s iconic art deco elements such as the clock tower and stained-glass windows. The new design features a studio theatre, bar, and ‘changing places’ facility open to the public. Moreover, the project will introduce extensions like a glazed rooftop pavilion offering views of the Bristol Channel, a passenger lift, auditorium, gallery, toilet facilities, and backstage areas.

The proposed restoration work encompasses reinstating the building’s original domed roof with modern insulation and bringing back the marine-styled weathervane. Officials revealed that significant progress has already been made, with the preliminary groundwork and interior strip-out completed. A compliant tender bid has been received for the upcoming construction, indicating that costs are within the expected range pending approval of additional funding from the owners agreement.

During the council meeting, it was highlighted that rejecting the extra capital could jeopardize the project timeline and risk losing the UK Government’s support from the Levelling Up Fund. The project timeline estimates that if the main works contract is awarded successfully, construction will commence in May 2025 and wrap up by spring 2027. Councillor Neelo Farr shared her excitement, stating, “This is exciting news for the Grand Pavilion project.”

The comprehensive renovation plans aim to breathe new life into the historic Porthcawl Grand Pavilion, a cherished landmark in the community. With a blend of restoration and modern enhancements, the project is expected to enhance the cultural landscape of Porthcawl and attract locals and visitors alike. The funding injection from the Welsh Government underscores their commitment to preserving heritage sites and stimulating economic growth through regeneration projects.

The Grand Pavilion project represents a significant investment in the cultural infrastructure of Porthcawl, aligning with the town’s ambitions for growth and revitalization. By safeguarding the architectural legacy of the Grand Pavilion while introducing contemporary amenities, the redevelopment aims to create a dynamic hub for arts and entertainment in the region. The community eagerly anticipates the completion of this transformative project, which promises to enrich the cultural tapestry of Porthcawl for generations to come.
