Legendary Wales prop Adam Jones recently revealed his dream rugby team, comprising players he encountered during his illustrious career. Jones, who currently serves as scrum coach at Harlequins, is renowned as one of Wales’ best tighthead props in the professional era. With three Grand Slams under his belt and two British & Irish Lions tours, Jones had the privilege of playing alongside some of the game’s all-time greats. He curated his ‘Ultimate XV’, featuring six Wales legends and other notable figures from the rugby world, while appearing on Danny Care’s Hits Different podcast.
Jones began his dream team with a formidable front row consisting of All Blacks Tony Woodcock and Carl Hayman at loosehead and tighthead props, respectively, and his friend Richard Hibbard as the hooker. Moving to the second row, Jones selected Alun Wyn Jones and Ireland’s Paul O’Connell. His back row included former Springbok Juan Smith and Ospreys stalwarts Jerry Collins and Filo Tiatia, the latter now interim coach at the Dragons. Jones shared anecdotes about his experiences playing with or against these players, highlighting their professionalism and impact on the game.
In the backline, Jones opted for a predominantly Welsh ensemble, with Mike Phillips at scrum-half and Dan Biggar at fly-half. His choice of Shane Williams on the wing drew high praise, emphasizing Williams’ exceptional skills and impact on the field. Other selections included Brian O’Driscoll, Tommy Bowe, and Jaque Fourie, with Leigh Halfpenny rounding off the team at full-back. Jones spoke fondly of each player’s qualities and contributions, showcasing his deep respect for their abilities and characters both on and off the pitch.
While Jones could have included himself in the lineup, he opted to showcase the talents of his former teammates and opponents, offering insight into what made each player special. His dream team reflects a blend of skill, toughness, and camaraderie, with a nod to the Welsh players who have made a mark on the sport. Jones’ selections not only celebrate the individual talents of these rugby icons but also underscore the collective achievements and memories forged on the rugby field. As a veteran of the game, Jones’ dream team exemplifies the spirit and excellence of rugby at its highest level.
