An abusive man who exerted control over every aspect of his partner’s life, including physically assaulting her, has been sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court. Anton Jones, 30, of Abergavenny, displayed a quick temper and abusive behaviour towards his partner, leading to a series of disturbing incidents.
During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Jones manipulated and controlled his partner financially, socially, and emotionally. The victim lived in constant fear, resorting to hiding her essential belongings to protect herself. She described how she would cower and plead with Jones to stop his attacks.
One particularly violent incident occurred when Jones discovered affectionate messages on the victim’s phone. Enraged, he physically assaulted her, headbutting her and causing her nose to bleed. The abuse escalated further when he threatened to kill her and himself while under the influence of drugs.
Jones engaged in a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour, which included monitoring the victim’s communication, restricting her interactions, and dictating her daily activities. Even after the victim reported him to the police, Jones attempted to intimidate her into dropping the charges, demonstrating a complete disregard for her safety and well-being.
In the court proceedings, Jones pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and perverting the course of justice. Despite his previous good character and mental health issues, Judge Eugene Egan handed down a 28-month prison sentence and imposed a 10-year restraining order.
