Abergavenny Women FC has announced with great sadness that they have made the difficult decision to discontinue the club’s operations. In a statement, the Premier Division club expressed that it had become apparent that continuing was an insurmountable challenge, with the odds stacked against them.
The club faced a setback in February when they were deducted six points for failing to fulfill two fixtures the previous month. Additionally, they have incurred fines totaling over £2,000 from the Football Association of Wales (FAW).
Having spent nine years in the top flight, Abergavenny found themselves relegated to the second tier in 2021 due to the restructuring of the women’s game in Wales—a decision they vehemently disagreed with, considering it unfair and incorrect.
For the 2022-23 season, the club obtained a tier one license and secured promotion to the Premier Division as champions of Adran South. However, Abergavenny encountered difficulties fielding a team for matches against The New Saints in January. Their season was plagued by poor results, losing 16 out of 20 fixtures, and they faced fines for various other issues.
In their statement, the club asserted that not all teams were operating under the same set of rules, suggesting an inequity in the competition.
At this time, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) has not yet provided a response to these claims.
Abergavenny has committed to working closely with their players and coaches to assist them in finding new clubs, offering support throughout the transition.
