The four things Eluned Morgan says she will focus on as First Minister

Eluned Morgan, the newly appointed First Minister of Wales, has outlined her priorities for Wales. After taking over the role in August without a leadership contest, she spent the summer engaging with people across Wales to understand their needs and desires for change. She introduced a new cabinet following this listening exercise, emphasizing her commitment to representing all voices, not just the powerful or vocal ones.

During her speech at the Senedd, Eluned Morgan highlighted four key areas of focus for her administration. Firstly, she plans to prioritise “Iechyd da” (good health) by reducing NHS waiting times, enhancing mental health services, improving access to social care, and advancing women’s health services. Secondly, she aims to create “green jobs and growth” to combat climate change, improve family livelihoods, and restore nature. The third priority is to provide “opportunities for every family” by raising educational standards, expanding social housing, and promoting success for all families. Lastly, she plans to enhance community connections through improved transportation infrastructures and empowerment of local decision-making.

Acknowledging the limitations of government resources, Eluned Morgan stressed the importance of setting priorities to achieve meaningful progress in these key areas. She expressed her commitment to driving positive change while recognising the challenges ahead. In response to queries from the Welsh Conservative group leader and Plaid Cymru, she defended her approach, citing the feedback from the public as the basis for her chosen priorities. Moreover, she appointed a “delivery minister” to ensure accountability and progress towards the set goals.

Despite facing criticism from opposition leaders over the perceived lack of substance in her plans, Eluned Morgan remains determined to deliver on her commitments to the people of Wales. She urged unity and cooperation to address pressing issues facing the nation, emphasising the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in building a better future. As she embarks on her term as First Minister, Eluned Morgan’s vision for a healthier, greener, more inclusive, and connected Wales sets the stage for a period of transformation and progress under her leadership.
