Funding awarded for improvements to popular Neath park

Neath Port Talbot Council has allocated £10,000 in funding to Glynneath Town Council for enhancing a popular local park in the area. The decision was ratified during a recent monthly cabinet assembly on September 11, 2024. This monetary injection aims to contribute to a larger project valued at over £800,000, aiming to rejuvenate Glynneath Miners Welfare Park into a transformative “destination park”. The project envisions leveraging the existing facilities’ potential while introducing new amenities to cater to present and future community needs.

The funding stems from the council’s Community Councils Minor Projects Scheme, tailored to assist local community councils in executing minor capital projects. The initial phase of the Glynneath project will involve repurposing a former bowling green within the park into an innovative play and learning space for children aged from preschool to 11. Besides, three existing tennis courts will be renovated, with a fourth court transformed into a multi-use games area (MUGA), delineated for activities like 5-a-side football, netball, and hockey.

Glynneath Town Council’s application highlighted the lack of significant investments in the Welfare Park over the past 30 years. Despite its neglect, community consultations underscored the park’s value as a cherished facility, with its enhancement ranking as a top priority for residents. The council sees it as their responsibility to revitalize this space, furnishing amenities that enrich the local environment and ensure longevity for future generations.

In a concurrent move, the council also sanctioned another application to aid Onllwyn Community Council in creating an outdoor toddler and family area alongside a playground on Roman Road, Banwen. These initiatives collectively signify a concerted effort towards enhancing community spaces and fostering a sense of community well-being.
